Tournament History

The Beach Rugby Tournament finds its origin in recreational youth rugby games on the beach, in the early nineties. Then in 1997, the ‘Vlaamse Rugbybond vzw’ organized the first Belgian Beach Rugby Championship.

The tournament grew as a ‘one-day-tournament’, with the participation of more and more Belgian Rugby clubs. The event lasted in that format up till the 8 th edition, 2004.
In the 9 th edition, the tournament was finally spread over a whole weekend. This asked for an improved organization, which fortunately reached its purpose: a better tournament and an excellent atmosphere for both participants and visitors…
Since the 10 th edition, the event has become a complete festival with the organisation of an own camping site for participants/supporters. And then, we didn't even mention the Barbecue and breakfast yet!

In 2009 we came back to Oostende in more then 10 years. But due to the restricted area that was available, we had to go search for a new location in 2011. This time we arrived in Bredene.

But as we were still looking to build our tournament to an international event, we have decided to locate our tournament to Zeebrugge in 2012. At the beachfront of Zeebrugge we will have enough space to build an International Beachrugby tournament worthy to be on the International calendar. We dearly hope to have find the best situated spot on the Belgian coastline and will try to keep this place for the coming years.

In het decreet van 7/05/2004 tot omvorming van de Vlaamse Openbare Instelling Commissariaat-generaal voor de Bevordering van de lichamelijke Ontwikkeling, de Sport en de Openluchtrecreatie tot het Intern Verzelfstandigd Agentschap met rechtspersoonlijkheid Bloso wordt de missie van de organisatie als volgt omschreven: het Vlaamse sportbeleid uit te voeren conform de taken, vermeld in artikel 5, om de sportparticipatie en de kwaliteit van het sportaanbod te verhogen en een integraal Vlaams topsportbeleid uit te bouwen. De taken vermeld in artikel 5 van dit decreet zijn de volgende: de organisatie van sportkampen en sportklassen in de Bloso-centra; het uitbouwen en ter beschikking stellen van de Bloso-centra aan sportfederaties, sportclubs, sportdiensten, topsporters en individuele sportbeoefenaars, onder meer voor de organisatie van trainingen, stages en wedstrijden, op alle niveaus; het zelf aanbieden en erkennen via de Vlaamse Trainersschool van sportkaderopleidingen; de internationale uitwisseling van trainers, sportexperts en topsporters; het voeren en coördineren van de sportpromotie op Vlaams niveau; de subsidiëring, de begeleiding en de inspectie van sportfederaties, sportdiensten en andere sportactoren; het uitvoeren en coördineren van een integraal Vlaams topsportbeleid; het uitbouwen van een Kenniscentrum Sport; het adviseren en begeleiden van de uitbouw van de sportinfrastructuur in Vlaanderen; vanuit de opgebouwde kennis en terreinexpertise beleidsgerichte input ter beschikking stellen van de beleidsondersteuning, bedoeld in artikel 4, §1, van het kaderdecreet.
